Some pictures of the school close by

These are all made with tile. It's truly a beautiful mosaic.

A peak inside at the playground. We're trying to motivat the Princess to want to go.

It's a little scary to think about going to a school where no one speaks your language and you don't speak theirs.

She's praying for one friend that speaks at least SOME English. She hasn't been approved to go there, yet. But it shouldn't be long now...

KFC

While waiting on our food at KFC we were entertained by some music my kids call "elevator music." The main difference between here and USA is that we were listening to "You Can't Hide Your lying Eyes" by the Eagles (instrumental only) as well as some good old country music (minus the words, of course). Quite interesting.
The truth of the matter is...that was our third visit to KFC in 16 days. Pitiful, I know, but so worth it!!

I just remembered I hadn't bragged...

The newest member on the King's side. Isn't she beautiful? I nicknamed her Zi (Zee).

...with the proud big sis!

I guess you're wondering...

How's school going? After all, that is what we came to do...learn the language and culture. Well, we got a late start to the sememster because of when we arrived. The school has been wonderful. There is another foreign couple that came about the same time and another student who has currently been here, but has missed many classes because of sickness...so they opened a class just for us. Nice.

However, I've been told that languages fall into a category of 1 through 4. 4 being the most difficult. There are only two languages in the 4 category: Navajo Indian and Japanese. We are a 3. No big deal. What?! My brain is revolting. After all, I'm an educated person. I'm smart. I know how to attack a problem and break it down. (What's that saying, "How do you eat an elephant?...one bite at a time.)I can do that. I was an American teacher for many years. I've taught so many learning strategies that I can do them in my sleep. So...what's the problem? Well, the way they teach, write, and pretty meuch do everything is "foreign" to me. Right, I know, it's supposed to be. My learning strategies have gone out the window and given way to sheer determination. I know it'll take time...a LONG time. I think, if I were just learning to speak, it would be different. But, learning to read, write, speak, and listen all at the same time is slowing me down considerably....but in the long run it will benefit me. If I really want to talk to these people about things that are important to them and to me, then I need to learn all that is taught to me. It just might take me the full two years!! or more.

As for culture...it's one thing to visit for two weeks and another to live here. Needless to say there are many adjustments taking place for all of us. We did alot of study on culture shock before we came and there are many phases and many different signs, but the problem is there is nothing to make it go away. You can learn all about what you'll go through, but there is nothing to help GET through it. You just do. Well, with Divine help.

So, are we experiencing culture shock? Yeah, we are. Are we "dealing" with it? The best we can. What can you do? Keep praying. What do we say? Thank you from the bottom of our hearts!

City sights...

From a bridge, we watched these men fish with plastic sacks.

Cars and bicycles in the same lanes...

Just some other random pictures...

Q= "What are you doing?"
A= "Watching those cats."
Q= "What cats?"

A= "Those cats. Q= Can't you see them?"
A= "Oh, those cats." To Dad..."Do YOU see them?"

Eventually we all did.

Now...let me ask you? Can you see them? Hint...you can't...they blend in. But to a little girl who hears them and misses her own...SHE can find them anywhere! and everywhere. It's hard to keep her from picking them up. They are wild and unclean...not the kind she's used to. Anyway...

My turn...

Before...

Mother Towel head.

Notice the "Wall of Fame" behind me...

Not exactly what I wanted, but it could've been MUCH worse. (No comments on the double chin, please.)

BEFORE...a little apprehensive about the first Asian haircut.

DURING...this awesome hairwashing that they do starting at the crown of your head and working their way out. When they have a ton of lather...they pull it off the back of your head and throw it away...then begin again. It feels wonderful!

TOWEL HEAD.

AFTER...not bad. This guy did a good job! They like to have their picture taken with Americans.

The side view. It's the style all are wearing where we are. He can't help it he's such a cutie!

A small torture...

I have know idea who reads this blog and I suspect there are newcomers as of late. Let me just preface this by saying that a girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do. If my SIL can post a picture of my brother in his skivvies, then at least I can post my husband's as they hang dry. I TOLD him to be nicer to me! (Kidding!)

The Princess likes to help wih laundry.

You know how I like to steal pictures?...

Here's my mom and dad. Don't they look great?

Mom, remember this?

This was my outfit. We left most of the Princesses dress-up things back home. She was outgrowing them anyway. She found this in one of my boxes and loves playing in it. Thought it might bring back memories for you mom. She posed just for you.

Shooting hoops...

Everybody needs a little R&R. And when it's inexpensive, fun, and good exercise...who can argue?

Cutie Patootie!

Some days you just gotta have a "do-rag."

Some times you just gotta stick your tongue out at your mom at the last second (as she's taking a cute picture of you for her blog! And sometimes she's just gotta blog it anyway.

After a few days of people touching her hair...she started covering it up for a few days. It's her perrogative.

OK, I admit it...

...I've been craving food from home. We were told by some other expats that there was a particularly tasty Pizza place not too far from home. When it was my turn to choose, guess what I chose? Of course. Back across the pond, we would rotate choosing Sunday lunch places. 3 out of 4 of us almost always chose local Chinese food, but I always wanted Mexican or Italian. Now that our choices are severly limited and it was my turn to choose...you know it...no noodles for me.

I'll have you know it was the best pizza I've ever had. One was like a Pizza Hut Supreme and the other was Hawaiian (Ham and pineapple). YUM! It was deep dish and SOOOO fattening. I enjoyed every bite. The surprise was that I had iced (red)tea with it. That's a rarity. The Prince had a time with his own video camera. Too funny.

Even the King enjoyed himself. We all ate too much because we were about to do some shopping and no one wanted to be responsible to keep up with "take away" food. So we ate it all. We'll go back there...not too often. Just often enough to savor every bite.

Random pics...

Helloooo in there!

A local baker is actually an artist.

Who's kidding who? He can't even touch the pedals.

Is that supposed to say "Ford?"

Some things never change...she's always putting things on her head. This is what I use to hang dry socks and unmentionables...

Manhood...

The Prince would like everyone to know that he has hair on his chin and one is especially long. WooHoo! I keep telling him he doesn't want to start shaving yet...he'll have to keep doing it! We'll see. Consider yourself informed. :)

FYI

I've noticed that since we've moved and I've done a few posts that the dates and times are American. Not that it really matters...but I like to see when people post, what time they are up. :) We are 13 hours ahead of most of you...depending on your time zone.

New home...

Who doesn't love Walmart? It's not exactly the same, but does give a taste of home.

And McDonald's? Again not the same, except for the fries!!! MMMMM.

At the gate to our building complex...

We're the colored tile buildings..but we're back off the road.

More Noodles...

Before we left...

Just thought you'd enjoy a glimpse of the Princess sleeping...with feet out of the covers like her mother. :)
