Happy Birthday, "Ludi"!

One of the things that made this decision to move around the world so difficult is that life will not stand still while we're gone. "Grandparents" pass away...little ones grow up...life moves on...without us. This precious one turned three and I remember standing behind his (HUGELY pregnant) mom and holding her belly to relieve some of the pressure from this (not so) little one (about 10 lbs)...and now he's three an talking up a storm!

We left behind two new nieces (you've seen the pics!) and the only real consolation in that is that when we return, (even though they won't know us, yet...) they won't be infants and we might actually make some memories they'll remember.

These last few (postless) days of holiday in a land that doesn't celebrate it have left me reflective. In the moments of my frail humanity, I want to be home with my family and friends. I want to be there when my brother and his family come home from Africa. I want to share in ALL of the firsts for those precious little ones. In moments of spiritual reality, I realize it's not about me. I'm where I'm supposed to be. What am I doing about it? Am I living a life in front of the ones I see everyday that points them to the Giver of Peace and Hope? The One who created them and longs for them to turn to Him. Truthfully, some days I don't get far past my own selfish ambitions to get my groceries without drawing a crowd. Other times, I can't get past their frail humanity and that they are just like me...but I've been redeemed. How do you tell someone without their language about the MOST important thing in your life? Well, I've heard it put this way..."Preach the gospel, if necessary...use words." What are you doing? Many of you live in a land where you speak a common language with your neighbor. Do they know what (WHO)'s in your heart? How? Tell them...use whatever means necessary... but, tell them. "Let your light so shine before men that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven."

Be encouraged today. Live in the fullness of His joy. Spread it around. You are loved! Thanks for stopping by.

My cup runneth over...

"A thankful heart is a happy heart. I'm glad for what I have; that's an easy way to start..." from a Veggie Tale...Madame Blueberry.

I just asked my family what they were thankful for as they were all doing something else. Off the tops of their heads this is what they said...

I'm thankful for...

Princess...
* my family
* my really silly brother
* my new friends
* that I have a translator
* for my goldfish
* everything!
* a place to live

Prince...
* family
* video games
* computer
* internet
* technology in general
* coats

King...
* Language dictionary
* local people helping us to get settled
* "It's okay," when said by nationals
* "long johns"
* Language teachers who want me to succeed
* local food (I've lost 10 lbs.!) as well as Pizza Hut, McDonald's, KFC, + Dairy
Queen!
* for the familiar peace of God even in a foreign country

Queen...
* faithfulness...from my God, from my friends, from my family
* a BREAK from local food...Papa John's is my new friend!!
* a change in life that forces me deeper spiritually
* for the deep, deep love of Jesus
* living in a place where roses are inexpensive (I get them often, now!)
* grace.
* my tutor!!
* a friend who absolutely HOUNDED me to start a blog...that I truly enjoy...now.

There really is so much to be thankful for. I look around me everyday and see people in want and need, both physically and spiritually. It's in their eyes that they lack hope and peace. I'm blessed with plenty. My Father owns the cattle on a thousand hills and meets my needs according to his glorious riches as well as gives me an abundantly full life. My cup runneth over...

As you celebrate the holiday with family and friends, take a moment to truly dwell on your blessings and thank the One responsible for them. My friend teases me because everything reminds me of a song or part of a song. This day is no different:

#1
"Count your blessings, name them one by one.
Count your blessings see what God has done."
(Don't know who wrote it, but it wasn't me.)

#2
"For all that You've done, I will thank you
For all that You're going to do
For all that You promised and all that you are
Is all that has carried me through,
Jesus, I thank you.

And I thank you, thank you, Lord.

Thank You for loving and setting me free,
Thank You for giving your life for me
How I thank you, Lord
Jesus, I thank you
Gratefully, thank you.

We received sad news today...

The Prince has never lost a loved one that he can remember. He has what I call "reminded memories" of things he's heard us say so many times from looking at pictures...but none he can TRULY recall.

We received news today that our beloved "surrogate grandmother" has gone home to be with Jesus. It is truly bittersweet. We know she is completely healthy and has all her memories now. It is hard, as a mother, to watch my son grieve as I am grieving...but..."we do not want you to be ignorant about those who fall asleep, or to grieve like the rest of men, who have no hope. We believe that Jesus died and rose again and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him."I Thessalonians 4:13-14

So...pray for us and for her dear husband who has cared for her all these years. She lovingly poured herself into everyone who was around. She will be dearly missed here.

I'm eternally grateful for how she and her husband tenderly loved my son and helped to point him to Christ. I'm also grateful that we were able to visit with them on our Farewell Tour. Sweet remembrances.

Okay, here it is...

A few weeks ago we met another expatriate family who was in our city on business. They've run a representative company (Parent company in the States)for five years that creates educational materials, but first they research different people groups. They study them and interview them and learn about their customs and then employ an artist to help them recreate scenes of their lives. Then those things are turned into things such as stickers, or picture books, etc. in order to be sold to educational companies as supplemental resources. It's quite interesting. They usually don't bring the whole family on business trips to town but had heard of us through a mutual friend and wanted to meet us (and our children). We hit it off...so to speak. We have many things in common including children about the same age. We spent an afternoon with them and they showed us things about our city we might never have learned on our own. They live a few hours away and invited us to come visit anytime and they'd show us around. The thing is they are going to the states for a wedding and won't be back for a while, "So... come next weekend if you want," they said. We went. We took them a turkey for Thanksgiving (at their request) and set out for an adventure. We had to get our own transportation across our city, then out of the city, and get to the correct place in a timely manner. Not such a big deal after all (when your husband speaks the language like mine does....remember he can speak better than he can understand!) Well after about a one hour bus ride across town and then another 2+ to their city we arrived. Traveling by bus in this country is interesting. One sidenote is that there was a movie playing in the local language and we picked up a few new words...not sure we should have...KIDDING! Any
way. Every expat we talk to gives us conflicting information. It seems everything is true SOMEWHERE in this country. We made our first BIG blooper, but it turned out okay. We've been told NOT to carry with your original documents (i.e. passports, student id, etc.) with us, but to carry copies. I'm usually the one to carry them, however, we had just finished some paperwork a day or two before and they kept my copies. I forgot to replace them and we left our city without ANY documentation of who we were. When we tried to register at the hotel, our new friend asked for our passports. YIKES! I felt so DUMB!!! Because our new friend (let's call him Joe) has a business in their city and is well known AND because the King has all his numbers memorized...they let us get by. But we learned that you have to put down nearly three times the amount of a "deposit" at a hotel. WHAT!? It's a fine line knowing how much money to carry. We had enough, but we were also educated. Anyway. Because this family has been here so long it's amazing how good their language is and people tell them all the time. Back to the passport situation...we knew they were all laughing at us, but we also knew we deserved it!!
Moving on...they offered and we let the keep our kids overnight. That was a blessing in disguise. One of the challenges we have faced as a family since moving is husband/wife time w/o interruption. We live in an apt less than half the size of our house. At our house we could send them to their rooms or outside or whatever while we completed a conversation. Here...we begin MANY conversations we never finish. Ugh. So, it was nice to be able to TALK about some things that needed decisions.

We had such a great time with them. They showed us all around their town and took us hiking up into the mountains and into some villages where there are people they are currently studying. We saw all kinds of neat, cultural things. After all...we're not just here learning language, but culture. And the village we went to is a group we are particularly interested in because of their musical heritage. We went across a stream in a boat and hiked up the mountain past a unbelievable gardens and tons of farm life. Graves built in the side of mountains, Buddhist temples, gaggle(?) of ducks running past us. Sun setting over the mountains....beautiful.

We ate hotpot for dinner(a first for me) and it was great (pics later). You pick what you want to eat and cook it at your own table. But first we rode our first motorcycle taxis....ummm...was actually fun! I videoed, but it was dark. Haven't checked it out yet...The Prince's camera doesn't do the HiDef thing. Might make you motion sick to watch!!

Then that night we were able to participate in another cultural event and were invited to participate (sing) in a Spring Festival in March. I would have politely declined, but I wasn't asked...the King was. So...we're doing it. It will be interesting to say the least...I'll keep you posted.

There is more to tell about the weekend, but maybe later. We're Thankful or our new friends and can't wait for them to come back. We had a GREAT visit.

Buddhist temple being built. They offered to feed us...cultural thing.

Walking through a village...

Crossing in a boat...skipping rocks

Whose chickens? Out of nowhere? Community?

Thanks friends!

We received your package. These are the pics I have of you (none of your hubby/daddy)and a few of us sporting our new clothes which we LOVE! The Princess wants those jammies washed to turn around and wear again. I don't think she's worn anything else (to sleep in) since they arrived. The nights have begun to be cold and these keep us warm. We appriciate you so much and the thoughtfulness of the package. (I came all the way around the world and left the Princess's craft supplies for her homeschooling. How blessed we are to have people who love us enough to not only gather the supplies, but mail them around the world...not cheap.) We love you and are praying for your new family additions. Keep us posted.

For fun...

Now...THAT's a friend! :)

Not the promised blog...but I happened upon these and thought you'd smile. So....how many marshmallows can you fit in your mouth? (Apparently it runs in my family...I found a pic like this on my SIL's myspace.)

More later...

The Prince doesn't have a "cute" pic...because he's NEVER serious (he gets that from his dad) when it comes to pictures!!

Anyway, I just put those on for you to look at while I promise you a longer post later. We have been SO busy and out of town for the last two weekends...much to say. God is good is the first thing... more later. Love to all.

Wondering about my Widget?

We are attending a Homeschool Conference for people who live in this part of the world (obviously) and we are tacking on some vacation days behind it (since we're there). We will be where it's warm and since today was pretty cool with very cold winds we've started looking ahead...thought it'd be fun to let you count with me.

An update...

Did I ever tell you that we did sell our house?...to some dear friends. What a blessing. The last house we sold...we had slowly refinished everything inside (well, almost) including some new appliances. Then we moved...and we found out the new owners tore out most of what we had done (i.e. the "less than a month old" wallpaper in the Master bath that I adored!) It made me sort of sad. ANYWAY, I know that the new owners of this house WILL have to change things because they have 2 boys and we had a definite PRINCESS room, but...whatever they do, my heart's cry is that they carry on the legacy we began. When the Lord blessed us with building that house, we dedicated every aspect back to Him. We wrote scripture on every wall before they textured. We tried to use it to honor Him. I think we did. We invited people to come away from their busy lives for a respite (we even had a few of them work on parts of the house with us!) We loved that house, the land it was on and where it was located. We were blessed, indeed. Who knows? Maybe we'll stay with THEM when we come back to the states. That would be amazing...to be the receiver of the blessing we dreamed of bestowing on others as we built it in the first place. The Lord willing...

I know some of you were wondering about my other child...

Remember I'm now using his camera...these are a few of the uploads...

He's quite good at entertaining himself...and us.

We really are proud of him. He's making a few friends and doing well in school. His language learning is coming along as well. Getting more handsome by the day. Everywhere we go people tell me how beautiful my daughter is and how handsome my son is. I know...I think so, too.

The Field Trip...

The students toured the new campus of the local university. However, it was mostly a science field trip with specimens of ALL sorts...

No matter how interesting the day may be...it is still in a foreign language. The students were sent to "interview" college students, but not the Princess. Not even with a translator. She just needed a few minutes by herself.

Another care package RECEIVED!!

Some of our DEAR friends (yes, that includes you, TLH) sent us things we needed and it got here! There's something so wonderful about getting that notice that a package has arrived for us and we haven't had an ounce of trouble picking them up, after all...in a land where we are definitely the minority race...who can fake our faces (or the bald, white man)?

We are grateful for servant hearts with follow through. Love, love, LOVE this family. Thanks dear ones. You are loved. We miss your smiles and hugs (and being smelled by you B-kie). :)

BTW, if you are a DEAR one sending a package I'll be posting your pic as well. If I don't have one...I'll hunt one down and steal it...like I did these! I hope you have some good ones or bad ones...I'll take what I can get!

Thanks again, Friends!

On a personal note...

Thank you for all of your kind words regarding the Princess and Kindergarten. The comments and emails made my heart smile and are truly appreciated. One thing about packing up your family and moving around the world is that you don't have your "support system" handy in a crunch, but I've been grateful for all of your encouraging words along the way.

Take joy in the journey...

A treasure to share...

Be still and know that He is God
Be still and know that He is holy
Be still, O restless soul of mine
Bow before the Prince of peace
Let the noise and clamor cease
Be still

Be still and know that He is God
Be still and know that He is faithful
Consider all that he has done
Stand in awe and be amazed
And know that He will never change
Be still

Be still and know that he is God
Be still and know he is our Father
Come rest your head upon his breast
Listen to the rhythm of his unfailing heart of love
Beating for His little ones
Calling each of us to come

Be still

If you've read this far you get the double blessing. As the King was singing this tonight in preparation for family worship time, he did something he RARELY does...he got choked up, which of course, choked me up and as we were catching our breath....we heard the Princess in the shower singing about washing her body and the phrase that penetrated our poignant moment was, "washing my hiney!" HILARIOUS!!!(Life is a song for her. My mom says I was the same way.) After we giggle and get back to singing...in the next pause we hear, "Your name, is a strong and mighty tower, Your name, is a shelter like no other, nothing has the power to save, but Your name!" Yes, Princess. Sing it out. Now and forever! We've experienced this in our lives this week. Even the Princess has learned that obedience is sometimes difficult, but when we call on Him...oh how sweet He is to meet us where we are. He's our strong and mighty tower!

A funny...

I started with a tutor in additon to classes, and she told me I look like an American movie star! I told her she needed to watch more movies!!!! HA!!

Care Package received!

Thanks Mom and Dad! (I know I've already posted this pic, but it's a good one!) Love you!

Life Lessons....

Sometimes as a mom/parent, you do things for/to your kids that you KNOW is the best thing for them, but may be difficult in the moment. Today was one of those days.

First day of Kindergarten. When registering, we were made to understand that it was a BIG deal for them to let us come AND to let us come in the middle of a semester AND to let us come for half days (at first). So we knew that we better be on our best behavior.

The Princess was semi-excited. She did Kindergarten in the States and I told her this was mainly for her to make new friends and to learn the language. She said, "But I have 3 new friends and Daddy is learning the language." Hmmm. So after further discussion...she was more excited. Her 2nd story window looks into the playground (through a tree or two...not such a good view) and we hear the music everyday. Her curiosity won out. When we arrived...they inspected her nails (made me trim them on the spot), looked in her eyes, ears, and mouth all while speaking this foreign language to her. It seems no one is allowed in if there is the hint of illness (nails are for safety on the playground). Her teacher met us (the same one from the previous blog) and began talking to me. I understood...not one word. She took the Princess by the hand, walked away, (I tried to stand back) and began introducing her...the kids didn't wait to be introduced. They began to swarm her. Looking into her blue eyes from AN INCH away, petting her hair (6 kids at once), talking to her loudly, and laughing in her face (about who knows what). I saw the deer in the headlights look, but was helpless to do anything because immediately the two girls she'd been introduced to began walking!!! Bless their hearts! The crowd fell away behind them as they walked. Whenever they'd stop walking, the swarm came again. So after the first time, the Princess was DRAGGING the two girls around the courtyard. They were all so excited about the ONLY foreigner in their school, they didn't realize what they were doing.

School began with PE in the courtyard. It was quite a beautiful thing to watch, actually. Music blared over loud speakers, (in the King's English, I might add) and as one giant unit they began to move. Motions, jumps, rhythm exercises, ballet moves, marching band formations (in and out) and ending in a game. (The Princess couldn't be persuaded to try all the new stuff...she just watched. We'll see how long before she does.)Then more music played and they moved to the playground while the youngest kids came out for PE. I've never seen anything like it.

Recess. Ahhh. A beautiful thing. Needs no language. The first real smile I saw from the Princess came at recess. When the swarm would come, the Princess would take the girls by the hand and drag them to the next thing. (Remember, she is a strong-willed child, and likes to have control.)

After recess was class, sort of. Snack first. Well, we're still adjusting to the food. No snack for the Princess and no language skills for the mom to explain to the teacher who is trying so diligently to help the Princess settle in. We have a rule...you have to try it once and no turning your nose up, just say, "that's interesting," and move on.

Class begins and I can tell the Princess is about to meltdown. The students are all sitting in nice rows, but they keep getting up to pet her hair or give her a book (in a language she can't read). They really are excited.

A sidenote...I have class and have made arrangements for a friend (who knows the language) to sit in class with her because I can't afford to miss a class. So, it's nearing time to handoff and I'm frustrated because several times someone has tried to communicate with me and it's failed. They don't speak my language, I don't speak theirs. The mommy in me wants to get my daughter, go home, crawl in bed with chocolate and a movie and forget this crazy idea of Kindergarten!! BUT, the mommy in me also knows that some of the lessons in life that are best for us are difficult for us. I've learned a few myself and I'm still learning.

As I'm leaving, the Princess begs, "Mommy, please just take me home." Oh, stick a knife in my heart!!! I assure her that when our friend comes, it will get better because she can explain what's going on and talk to the teacher and that school is half over. I meet our friend at the gate and explain that she's struggling, but, "I think she'll perk up when she sees you."

After I leave, I SERIOUSLY want to go home and cry!!! But, I don't. I have on my armor and I won't be defeated that easily. I go to one of the hardest classes I've had...yet, and fight my emotions all the way through. When my class is over and we meet up with the Princess and my friend...guess who is smiling? Yep, she is. Things definitely get better when you KNOW what's going on. And when someone can speak on your behalf. After I left, my friend asked the teacher to have them stop "petting" her. The teacher asked them how they would like all these kids putting their hands in your hair all the time? That was all it took. Maybe mom isn't always the best, but I definitely KNEW best this time. And guess what else? There's a field trip on her 2nd day of school! She can't wait to go back!

The day started well, with a family prayer at home, got worse, and worse. before it got better...but I'm so glad I don't have to live by my emotions. My heavenly Father pours his mercies out NEW every day. I CLUNG to them today in a way I haven't in awhile. My quiet time this morning was in Phil. 1. A theme throughout was joy. Joy! Joy vs. happiness. Something that stood out to me before this day began was, "Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ." It's easier some days than others.

By the way, I hesitated to be this honest, but you know...God is good...all the time...even when circumstances aren't ideal. He's worthy of praise no matter what. So, praise God from whom all blessings flow!

Well....a deep subject.

Ok. No pictures...you'll be glad when you find out why. While registering the Princess for Kindergarten, she needed to go potty. Yes, you're right. Squatty potty. Well, mom has to go with her because it's still a new procedure to her. There's not enough room for both of us and the door won't lock. So, Princess of modesty (of which I'm thankful) says mom hold the door from the inside with me. I'm holding the door and I realize she's not down far enough and is about to get her pants. I grab the pants with my other hand and pull them out of the way just in the nick of time. (A side note is that a good friend of mine gave me this great purse that is across the shoulder and hangs in front of me so I can't be pickpocketed easily. Another sidenote ...All the pictures you've been viewing are thanks to my last year's Christmas present from the King. I carry it with me everywhere. You never know when you might want a picture of the kids growing up, oh, so fast!)Back to the story...as I'm holding the door and the pants and bent at the waist because there is not room for me to squat, too.....(have you guessed?) yep, my camera slides right out of my bag and right down the...well or hole or whatever you want to call it!!! We both watched as it happened in slow motion but not slow enough for me. I have really good reflexes, but what do I let go of??!! Too late. I hesitated. We both sort of yelled a reaction and I'm thinking, "Well, it was a great camera." Nice eulogy. The principal and the Princess' teacher came running thinking she had fallen in! We told them it was just the camera. They sent for the custodian and they fished it out, washed it off (with soap), dried it off, gave it back to me and we moved on. WHAT?! I couldn't believe their graciousness. I don't know if it can be fixed or if it even will work. The good news is, I had just downloaded everything from it on Saturday. We only "lost" about 20 pics and a few video clips. We'll see. The Prince has a camera. We'll try using it. In the meantime, stay tuned for the first day of school...

My lifesavers...or rather footsavers...

Everywhere I go...people stare at my shoes. Now let me remind you that I had a closet full of shoes that I gave away to move over here and I even came with one LESS pair than my hubby! I traded cute for comfort knowing we would be walking most places. I have NOT regretted it, yet. One day we were on our feet ALL day and my feet didn't ache until I got off them. LOVE my Chacos! No one over here goes for comfort...they go for cute. Not me...well, I hope I don't have to. I mean, I'm caucasian...I'll never fully fit in...do I have to give up my Chacos?

Okay...not the best picture.

She was walking away...the ground here is uneven and would be amazingly difficult to push a stroller in, even at that this is the only flat surface just about anywhere, yet...most women wear high heals! YIKES. Explains why they stare at my Chacos!

More new friends...

You can get a workout at this air hockey game!

Two new friends...

Another playplace!....

I'll share my big brother.

A historic landmark...

Just yesterday as it hit 85 degrees, I told the King that on days like that I missed driving through a McDonald's for a cold fountain Diet Dr. Pepper.

Then...we discovered this is the FIRST 24 hour McDonald's with a drive through in the nation. Not that is does us any good...we don't have a car. If you've seen the traffic over here...that should scare you!

The Princess's zoo...

How she sleeps with all of those...I'll never know. Each has a name and most have a birthday. She knows where they each belong. Some are Webkinz, some were gifts after she got here, some I surprised her by bringing from home. She'd like to have a skunk and a chipmunk (webkinz) to add to her collection, but we can't get them over here. She has a giraffe family of 4, a leopard mom and cub, 2 domestic cats, 2 domestic dogs, a snoopy wanna-be, a horse, a bear, a pig,2 dragons, and a cat neck pillow. OH! and an ARISTOCATS pillow!
It sort of looks like a "Where's Waldo?" page.

Can you see the smoke?

I grew up teasing about Asian fire drills....now I've been through one. On Friday's the kids go to class with us, so they experienced it, too.

Afterward, the local news station wanted to interview a "foreigner" to get our thoughts on it. The funny thing was we had no idea what they were asking so he just talked about the similariites to ours in America....which surprised me. I didn't see any. They took us outside and actually lit a fire and showed everyone how to use and extinguisher, hence the smokiness in the sky. He said he had to keep the witty comments to himself for fear of disrespecting them. But if you know him, you know it was a difficult thing to do. :)

Lunch at a local restaurant...

This is what I thought would make me get skinny...

This is what's keeping me from getting skinny. I (a non-fish eater) didn't eat the fish, but the sweet/sour pork, eggplant, eggs and tomatoes, beef with bell peppers, and noodles and rice were delicious.
